THE SANCTUARY PLEDGE

If you're a small not for profit animal rescue or shelter based in Greater Manchester with a no kill policy this service is completely free of charge on a reduced coverage basis. Yes, you heard that right. There are absolutely no strings attached (well apart from allowing me lots of strokes if possible!) although sadly there might be a bit of a wait and all I ask is that you cover any travel expenses incurred if you're based outside of Bury. There will be a one time session cap per business although if my images helped in any way to re-home your animals I would be more than happy to come back and help again on the same no fee arrangement when my schedule allows it.

WHAT INSPIRED THE PLEDGE?

Whilst researching into animal businesses it came to my attention that all of the small not for profit local sanctuaries in my area were using low quality mobile phone pictures to promote their animals and services and it was so upsetting to see. Visual branding is such an important aspect of any business although it just isn't prevalent when it comes to sanctuaries and rescues despite animals being the main focus point of the business. Feeling perplexed by the pattern I was noticing I Googled 'Sanctuary Photographer' (because surely that must be a thing?!) and I couldn't find a single one in the UK! How strange is that?

HOW WILL IT BENEFIT US?

I've done a lot of volunteering work over the years with the most significant being at Oxfam. The shop I worked at lacked a social media presence and within a day of rounding up volunteers to build up case studies and feature volunteers on their Facebook page not only did the shop see a growth in online engagement and volunteers which was a problem but the marketing manager in the South of England spotted the case studies and asked to feature the images on a regional campaign. The power of images and stories are two of the core values of marketing. My aim is to follow that example and try and convert an increase in volunteers to an increase in animals being re-homed!

HOW DOES IT WORK?

That's entirely up to you! The project is new, and I'm still learning and I guess you will be too with no other project like this currently set up in the UK. The session is entirely customisable around your shelters needs. Whether you want a few pictures of how the shelter is run on a day to day basis or you would like some animal headshots to hopefully help re-home some long time residents. DISCLAIMER

Whilst I make jokes about lots of cuddles during a visit I'm all too aware of the sad reality of shelters and I know it isn't always rainbows, sunshines and strokes. It can be difficult seeing animals distressed and can take a mental toll on both the animals and humans (I can't even imagine how volunteers cope on a daily basis!) but it makes the project all that more worthwhile knowing that there is a chance to do some good and potentially help put a stop to that misery.
